Klinisch patholoog

Ik streef naar een zo hoog mogelijke kwaliteit van diagnostiek.

Na het afronden van mijn opleiding Pathologie in Maastricht ben ik gaan werken bij Stichting PAMM in Eindhoven. Vanaf 2010 ben ik patholoog in het ETZ. Ook ben ik opleider van arts-assistenten. Mijn aandachtsgebieden zijn de hoofd-halsoncologie, neuropathologie en pathologie van de huid.

Als patholoog heb ik met alle vakgebieden te maken. Wij doen onderzoek voor de urologie, gynaecologie, dermatologie, etc. We dragen bij aan alle oncologische patiëntenbesprekingen en maken zo een belangrijk deel uit van het behandeltraject. Wij zien zelf geen patiënten maar hebben wel veel overleg over de patiënt.

Therapie op maat

In mijn werk streef ik ernaar om zo goed en zo adequaat mogelijk de diagnose te stellen. Daarvoor zet ik alle mogelijke middelen in. Mijn collega’s en ik overleggen vaak en we hebben veel technieken tot onze beschikking om dingen uit te zoeken. Indien nodig vraag ik collega’s van andere ziekenhuizen of een expert in het buitenland om advies.

Met aanvullend onderzoek van het DNA kunnen we steeds specifiekere diagnoses stellen. We kunnen zo bijvoorbeeld vaststellen of een tumor wel of niet op een bepaalde vorm van chemotherapie zal reageren. Zo kan de therapie beter worden afgestemd op de patiënt. Kennis over deze vorm van ‘gepersonaliseerde therapie’ neemt steeds meer toe.

Duidelijkheid bieden

Ik vind het belangrijk om patiënten die vragen hebben over onze diagnoses, duidelijkheid te bieden. Ons vak is niet altijd even zwart-wit. Als ik aan een patiënt kan uitleggen waarom een bepaalde keuze is gemaakt en daardoor mensen gerust kan stellen of kan zorgen voor meer begrip, dan doe ik dat graag.
